Soon the whole world will be covered in scrunchy hats. You can knit them any gauge, with any yarn, but I’ve been working mine in Manos del Uruguay. Their variegated colors are marvelous and with a thick gauge, they knit up fast. I did the red one in about 4 hours.
One thing I’m finding with Manos is the thickness of the yarn varies from skein to skein. All three hats were knit with size 9 needles, but the blue one is distinctly larger than the red and the brown-orange.
For the scarf, I knitted the undulating basket weave of the scrunchy hat in the structure of Karen Baumer’s Multidirectional Diagonal scarf. It needs a wee bit of blocking to square off the ends, but I’m not going to block it flat – I love the “scrunchiness”. Plus, it traps air to make a nice warm scarf.
All scrunchy hats inspected and approved by Neffie.
