When we first started having advanced classes I was kind of scared. I expected every class to be a “guts” class, the kind of hard constant physical workout that makes you want puke your guts.
Now I look forward to our two-hour classes the second Saturday of every month. They are intense, but as emotionally intense as physical – sometimes even more so (bring out the practice knives!)
This last Saturday was another good class. I was paired up with Sifu Jack for a contront drill. We practiced attacking each straight on (slow speed). As S.Jack attacked me he encouraged me to keep my energy out, calling me out whenever I withdrew energetically. He tapped and slapped my face and told me to stay present.
I found it very challenging to both stay fully present and react appropriately. I learned that if I can’t see, I think I can’t be present. Now I get to figure out how to do that: how to project energy even when I’m not able to make eye contact with my partner.
